Used electric cars: what to check before taking one into stock

Battery health, charging, bodywork, software and documents: a checklist for used-car teams taking in more electric cars every month.

Electric cars are now a regular part of used-car stock. In December 2025 they made up 8% of used cars sold by Aramisauto, one of France's main used-car retailers.

Most of the usual inspection still applies. But an electric car adds a few points that decide its value, starting with the battery.

The battery comes first

The battery is the most valuable part of an electric car, and its state of health (SoH) largely sets the price. Ask for a recent battery certificate, or have one carried out, and keep it with the report. Also check the remaining manufacturer warranty on the battery and the conditions for transferring it.

Charging

Test charging on both an AC point and, where possible, a fast charger. Check the charging port for damage or burn marks, that the flap closes properly, and that the charging cables supplied with the car are present: they are expensive to replace.

Bodywork, tyres and underbody

Electric cars are heavy and deliver strong torque from a standstill, which wears tyres faster. Check the tread carefully. Look under the car too: the battery pack sits low, and scrapes or impacts on its casing need to be documented.

Software and connected services

Check that software updates and recalls have been done. Make sure the previous owner has removed their account from the car's app and connected services, so that the next owner starts with a clean car and no one keeps access to it.

Documents to collect

  • The battery health certificate.
  • The service history and the record of software updates.
  • The battery warranty terms and remaining coverage.
  • All charging cables and both keys.

Pricing a used EV

Battery health, remaining warranty and charging capability weigh more on the price than mileage alone. A report that puts these facts next to the photos of the car helps the buyer understand the price, and helps the seller defend it. Steer Autos lets teams attach these documents to the inspection report.
