From damage detection to price: connecting condition to value
Pricing teams don't price cars, they price risk. Here is how condition data flows into repair estimates, reconditioning choices and the final price.

Two cars of the same model, year and mileage can be worth very different amounts. The difference sits in their condition: a scratched bumper, a cracked windscreen, four tyres to replace.
Yet in many businesses, inspection and pricing still live in separate tools and separate teams. The inspector writes a note; the pricer reads it, or not, and applies a standard deduction.
Pricing is a question of risk
What a buyer or a trade partner really pays for is certainty. Every unknown in the condition of a car turns into a safety margin taken off the price. The more precise the condition data, the smaller that margin needs to be.
Linking each finding to a decision
- Cosmetic: light scratches and marks that a detailer can treat. Usually a small, predictable cost.
- Repair: dents, damaged panels, cracked glass. These need a quote and decide whether reconditioning is worth it.
- Structural or mechanical: anything that raises a safety question. These often send the car to a trade channel rather than retail.
Reconditioning or resale as is
Once each damage carries an estimated cost, the choice becomes a calculation: is the price gained after repair higher than the repair itself and the days lost? Some cars are worth reconditioning for retail; others sell better to a trader, as they are, with a clear report.
Closing the loop
The most valuable data comes after the sale: what the repair really cost and what the car really sold for. Fed back into the next estimate, it makes every price a little more accurate than the last.
A precise condition report is a smaller safety margin, and a smaller margin is a better price.
Steer Autos connects each detected damage to a repair estimate and to pricing in the same flow, so the person setting the price sees the same evidence as the person who inspected the car.
